There is a decent chance that whoever lifts the FedExCup at East Lake this Sunday will be the last player ever to win it in its current form. On Tuesday morning, a day before this year’s field even teed off, PGA Tour CEO Brian Rolapp confirmed what had been rumoured for months: starting in 2028, the Tour Championship stops being a 72-hole stroke-play event and becomes something closer to a knockout tournament, decided over two weeks of match play at two different courses. The FedExCup Playoffs as golf fans have known them since 2007 are being retired, and East Lake’s run as the sport’s permanent, single-venue finale is coming to an end with them.

By the time this week’s BMW Championship finishes at Bellerive, the field will have shrunk from 70 to 50 to 30, and the survivors will head to East Lake next week to settle the FedExCup the way they have for the past two seasons: as a straight 72-hole stroke-play event, everybody starting on even par, whoever shoots the lowest number over four rounds walks off with the trophy and the ten million dollars. Almost nobody misses what came before it. I do.
