The 2026 Players Championship delivered one of the most dramatic final rounds in the tournament’s history on Sunday, with Cameron Young storming home to claim a one-shot victory over Matt Fitzpatrick at TPC Sawgrass.

Young, who entered the final round trailing 54-hole leader Ludvig Aberg by several shots, carded a superb closing round to finish at 13-under 275. The win is comfortably the biggest of his career and cements his status as one of the most talented players on the PGA Tour.

The 17th that changed everything

The pivotal moment came at the island green par-3 17th, where Young found the putting surface and rolled in a clutch birdie putt to draw level with Fitzpatrick, who was playing in the group ahead. With the packed grandstands erupting around the iconic hole, Young showed the kind of composure that has sometimes eluded him in big moments early in his career.

On the par-4 18th, Young launched a monster 375-yard drive that split the fairway, leaving himself a straightforward approach to the green. When Fitzpatrick missed his par putt, Young needed only a simple tap-in to seal the title and the enormous winner’s cheque.

Aberg’s Sunday stumble

The story might have been very different had Ludvig Aberg maintained the form that had him leading by three shots heading into Sunday. The talented Swede had been imperious through three rounds, but the final day proved a different challenge entirely.

Back-to-back water balls led to costly double bogeys that saw his lead evaporate in alarming fashion. A closing 76 saw Aberg slip all the way to a tie for fifth, a painful reminder that TPC Sawgrass demands respect on every single shot, regardless of the cushion on the scoreboard.

Fitzpatrick so close again

For Matt Fitzpatrick, the runner-up finish will sting. The Englishman played outstanding golf all week and put genuine pressure on the leaders throughout Sunday’s final round. A missed par putt on 18 was the difference between a playoff and watching Young celebrate.

Fitzpatrick has now accumulated an impressive collection of top-five finishes at marquee events, and it feels like only a matter of time before he adds another big title to his 2022 U.S. Open triumph.

What it means

For Young, this win answers a question that had followed him since his runner-up finish at the 2022 Open Championship: can he close out the big one? The answer, delivered on one of golf’s grandest stages, was emphatic. At 29, Young is entering the prime of his career with the confidence that comes from knowing he can handle the Sunday heat at the very highest level.

The PGA Tour now moves to the Valspar Championship at Innisbrook Resort’s Copperhead Course in Palm Harbor, Florida — a demanding layout that rewards precise ball-striking and patience. After the fireworks at Sawgrass, it will be fascinating to see which players carry their momentum into another testing Florida venue.
