There is a version of a big win where a player nurses a lead home, and there is the version Lucas Herbert produced at JCB Golf and Country Club, which was closer to a demolition. Four rounds of 61, 66, 69 and 62 added up to 258, thirty shots under par, and by the time the Australian tapped in his last putt on Sunday he had not just won LIV Golf United Kingdom, he had rewritten the league’s own scoring record in the process.
The old mark stood at 27-under, set earlier this season by Tyrrell Hatton, who found himself on the wrong end of history this time. Hatton played the sort of golf that would have won most weeks on tour, closing with a bogey-free 63 to finish at 24-under, and it still left him six shots adrift. Bryson DeChambeau, who arrived at JCB with the week’s other obvious length advantage, could only manage third at 21-under, nine back of a winner who simply refused to make a mistake worth mentioning.

A second win with nothing left to prove
This was Herbert’s second individual title of the season, following a wire-to-wire win at LIV Golf Virginia back in May, and the two victories together make a fairly strong case that 2026 has been the best year of his career. What stood out at JCB was not just the scoring average but how he compiled it. Herbert finished the week with 30 birdies, a new individual record for a single LIV event, and there was barely a round in which he looked troubled. A 61 to open the tournament put him in front by the end of day one, and nobody meaningfully closed the gap after that.
Golf courses in England in late July are not supposed to yield scores like this without some help from the conditions, and JCB Golf and Country Club, playing firm and receptive after a dry summer, certainly gave the leaders room to attack. But plenty of players had the same conditions in front of them and could not get near 30-under. Cameron Smith, in fourth at 17-under, put together a tidy week without ever threatening the top two, and the gap between third and fourth on the leaderboard was as telling as the gap between first and second. This was a week where the very best players separated themselves cleanly from a strong field, rather than a case of low scoring across the board.
Ripper GC completes the sweep
The team competition went the same way as the individual one. Ripper GC, Herbert’s team, finished at 52-under across their four counting scores, comfortably ahead of Legion XIII at 48-under and Crushers GC at 42-under. It meant Herbert walked away from Uttoxeter with both an individual trophy and a team title in the same week, on a course where his own scoring did most of the heavy lifting for his teammates besides.
For a league that spends a good deal of its energy being talked about in terms of money and politics rather than golf, a week like this is a useful reminder of what the product actually looks like when someone plays well enough to make an entire field look ordinary. Whether a 30-under total says more about Herbert’s form or about how firm and generous JCB played is a fair question, and probably the honest answer is a bit of both. What is not in question is the manner of the win itself, four rounds without a hint of the kind of stumble that usually creeps into even the best closing rounds under pressure.
What comes next
LIV Golf moves to New Jersey next, with LIV Golf New York at Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster following in a fortnight. Herbert will arrive as the man of the moment, and Hatton, having come off second best twice now in a season where he has otherwise looked like the league’s most consistent player, will have every reason to want the rematch sooner rather than later. Whatever happens at Bedminster, JCB Golf and Country Club has already produced the number the rest of the season’s venues will be measured against.
